Not technically "free shells", more like "Conditionally Free". For an account you have to sit in their IRC channel and "get to know them". Anapnea offers membership to people and projects the community deems constructive and full of potential.

I mainly use this shell service for irssi. The community on IRC is very unfriendly and you'll likely never receive a response if you go to their channel for help. Emailing their sysadmin can take you weeks for responses. Since I've been able to use irssi on a more friendly shell service I have stopped using anapnea.

I've been involved with Anapnea since shortly after its original conception, several years ago. Two things have not changed: the administrator, and the friendly attitude to friendly users. Through various reincarnations the staff team has learned a lot about Doing It Right (alternatively "How Not To Do It"), and it shows.
