They've worked hard to build a great community and it shows, fantastic & friendly people. I'm running screen & irssi connected to 6 different networks and 16 channels and everything works swimmingly when I go to update my site or play with whatever script I've been working on. The best free shell out there, hands down.

I've been using BlinkenShell for months now.
Even tough it might seem a lot of work to get in, it is definitely worth it!

Great shell, and the guys in the IRC channel are fun too :-) . I've been a user since 2007.

Note that PayPal is _not_ required as stated in some other comments. You can choose between PayPal verification or verification by texting (SMS). I chose verification by texting and it worked without any problems.

Nice community and helpful admin. People in #blinkenshell is polite and supportive, I definetively suggest Blinken if you're looking for active community *nix users community.

Blinkenshell is a top notch free shell host. They do ask you to verify yourself by a 0,01 payment but that shouldn't be a problem for honest people who want to have a 100mb shell with all these goodies loaded in it.
The best thing about blinkenshell is that there is a great community behind the #blinkenshell. They are open minded people from various countries (and some weird misfits that should not walk arround in public).

I give it 5 stars.

Works well, good uptime, nice admin, cool community and entirely free (as answered before PayPal is just 1 way to verify, I used the SMS method and didn't have to pay 1 cents. Donations are appreciated but not required)

Paypal is one way of verification, the other method only requires you to receive an SMS. So yes, this is a free provider.
Blinkenshell also requires you to be "active in the community", but I'm not sure why you think this is "above average activity".

It could be a very nice provider, but
- 1. They demand above average activity on their IRC channel
- 2. For signing up you need to have at least a VERIFIED PayPal account, because you need to make a symbolic amount of donation (0.01 USD) for them.
(Literally its not a "free" provider.)

(Dear Webmaster, please make a decision to remove this provider from the list - because of the reasons above - or not, if its possible.)
