Sure, its one of the oldest free providers, but sorry to say, their signup process is very obsolete and lumbering. Otherwise, it can be a good choice.

Nyx started as a pet project of one of the instructors at the University of Denver Math and Computer Science Department, around 1987.
Years later, Nyx was consuming school resources because of its popularity. and had to be split off into a non profit 501c3.
Nyx provides:
1) complete shell access to their Sun systems Solaris OS.
2) They provide some disk space for personal files.
3) Home web pages can be setup, within in the allowable space
4) FTP, telnet, ssh access
5) Mail (you can customize spam-assassin rule sets, etc), forward mail, use procmail, etc
6) COMPLETE usenet newsgroups access from command window, I don't think it works from outside though, I'm not sure)
I've been a user with nyx since 1989 when I was a grad student there, and I even built some of the custom cable to work with the original donated HW (now long gone of course). The users provide wonderful help within a couple of local newsgroups.
They will require either a notorized application form, or as I prefer, a check donation with your info to prove you are really you. They are only supported by those donations, so it is really a good cause.
I can't praise Nyx enough, the original philosophy was to provide unix to the public, and that is what they have done all these years.
